Associated Equipment: Test media was a custom CD created with CoolEdit Pro 1.1 in 32 bit mode, converted to 16 bit with 0.53 bits of spectrally uniform, Gaussian distributed dither; and burned onto Ricoh media using a Plexstor R412C and EZ CD Deluxe 3.5. Signals processed into computer using a LynxONE. Signal analysis with SpectraLab 3.32.14.

Discussion Of Results

These measurements were made on the player's variable analog output, as the voltage of the fixed output clipped the input of the LynxONE in -10 mode (slightly > 2.0 volts). The SNR was unusually good for a 16 bit digital device. This is a "second generation" player, the follow-on to the origional CDP-101, a new product ca. 1984.

This player produced some unsual results with some of the CD-R's it was tested with. It appeared to have extreme problems reading one of them, and would provide an audibly distorted output that had a coarse "staircase" appearance on the oscilloscope. On other CD-R's, rapidly repeating short bursts of noise could be heard. Others sounded just fine. All of the test CD-R's were bit perfect when analyzed on the on the reference CDROM (Plexstor R32TS) and evidenced no problems when played on a low-cost player of recent manufacture (Sony CDPXE-500).
